When Aeronautics Meets 6G Communications and AI

Topic summary:

Telecommunications  empowers aerial vehicles to communicate with the ground control station through air-ground communications or satellite communications, which has significantly improved the safety and operation efficiency of various aircrafts. 

However, therapid development of aircrafts and critical flight limitations make the current crowded space area more concentrated, which not only increases the workload of existing communication systems but also imposes more stringent requirements such as peak data rate and latency for safety related aeronautical communications. 

In the wireless communications community, communication  technologies have been developed rapidly from 1G to 5G, and the next generation(6G) mobile communication system has been proposed and is envisioned to support global seamless coverage with space-air-ground integrated networks, which make sit possible to use 6G to support the aeronautical applications. 

On the other hand, aerial vehicles are also part of the 6G system, which provide platforms for communication devices. In light of this, 6G and aeronautics will be interconnected more tightly in the future. The interoperation of 6G and aeronautics makes the conventional communication systems more complex, ranging from the propagation model, resource management, and trajectory planning etc.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play an important role in the highly dynamic network environment, to deal with more heterogeneous resource management and more time critical aircraft control, resulting in AI empowered 6G for aeronautics and AI enabled aeronautics for 6G.This special issue will bring leading researchers and engineers from both industry andacademia together to present their latest research on 6G for aeronautics andaeronautics for 6G with AI. 

The content of the special issue will focus on the 6G network architecture for aeronautics and implementations, interoperation technologies, performance modeling and optimization, resource management in 6G and aeronautics, and other enabling technologies.

The areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

(11) 6G/AI-based ultra-reliable communications and control

(12) 6G/AI-based aircraft trajectory optimization

(13) 6G / AIenabled multiple aircrafts coordination

(14) Autonomous intelligent flight control and task planning

(15) Joint communication and control design for aircrafts

(16) Energy-efficient aircraft communications and navigation

(17) Radio and space resource management for aircraft communications

(18) Massive MIMO / Millimeter wave communications for aircrafts

Chinese Journal of Aeronautics is an international, peer-reviewed and open-access journal of aerospace engineering published by Elsevier. The latest SCI impact factor is 2.215, which ranks JCR Q1 among journals of Aerospace Engineering.

Executive editors:



  Qihui Wu was appointed the Changjiang Distinguished Professorship in 2016. He received the B.S. degree in communications engineering, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in communications and information systems from the Institute of Communications Engineering, Nanjing, China, in1994, 1997 and 2000, respectively. From 2003 to 2005, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Southeast University, Nanjing, China. From 2005 to 2007,he was an Associate Professor with the Institute of Communications Engineering, PLA University of Science and Technology, Nanjing, China, where he is currently a Full Professor. From March 2011 to September 2011, he was an Advanced Visiting Scholar in Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, USA. Since 2016,he is with the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and he has been appointed as a Distinguished Professor. His current research interests span the areas of wireless communications and statistical signal processing, with emphasis on system design of software defined radio, cognitive radio, ands mart radio.



Rui Zhang (IEEE Fellow) received the B.Eng.(First-Class Hons.) and M.Eng. degrees from National University of Singapore, and the Ph.D. degree from Stanford University, Stanford, CA USA, all in electrical engineering. From 2007 to 2009, he worked as a researcher at the Institute for Infocomm Research, ASTAR, Singapore. Since 2010, he has joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of National University of Singapore, where he is now a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering. His current research interests include UAV/satellite communication, wireless power transfer, reconfigurable MIMO, and optimization methods. He has published over 400 papers, which have been cited more than 38,000 times. He has been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher by Thomson Reuters/Clarivate Analytics since 2015. He was the recipient of the 6th IEEE Communications Society Asia-Pacific Region Best Young Researcher Award in 2011, and the Young Researcher Award of National University of Singapore in 2015.

He was the co-recipient of the IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications in 2015 and 2020, the IEEE Communications Society Asia-Pacific Region Best Paper Award in 2016, the IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award in 2016, the IEEE Communications Society Heinrich Hertz Prize Paper Award in 2017 and 2020, the IEEE Signal Processing Society Donald G. Fink Overview Paper Award in 2017, and the IEEET echnical Committee on Green Communications & Computing (TCGCC) Best Journal Paper Award in 2017. His co-authored paper also received the IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award in 2017. 

He served for over 30 international conferences as the TPC CoChair or an Organizing Committee Member, and as the guest editor for 3 special issues in IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing and IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. He served as an elected member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society SPCOM and SAM Technical Committees, and the Vice Chair of the IEEE Communications Society Asia-Pacific Board Technical Affairs Committee. He served as an editor for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (Green Communications and Networking Series), and IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. He is now an editor for the IEEE Transactions on Communications, and IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking. He serves as a member of the Steering Committee of the IEEE Wireless Communications Letters. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Signal Processing Society and IEEE Communications Society. 



  Guoru Ding is currently an Associate Professor with the College of Communications Engineering, Nanjing, China. He received the B.S.(Hons.) degree in electrical engineering from Xidian University, Xi’an, China, in 2008, and the Ph.D.(Hons.) degree in communications and information systems from the College of Communications Engineering,Nanjing, China, in 2014. From 2015to 2018, he was a Post-DoctoralResearch Associate with the National Mobile Communications Research Laboratory, Southeast University,Nanjing , China.His research interests include cognitive radio networks, massive MIMO ,machine learning and data analytics over wireless networks.

He has received the Excellent Doctoral Thesis Award of the China Institute of Communications in 2016, the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship in 2017, the Excellent Young Scientist of Wuwenjun Artificial Intelligence in 2018, and the 14th IEEE COMSOC Aisa-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2019. He was a recipient of the Natural Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of Jiangsu Province,China and six best paper awards from international conferences such as the IEEE VTC-FALL 2014.He has served as a Guest Editor forthe IEEE JOURNAL ON SELECTED AREAS IN COMMUNICATIONS (specialissue on spectrum sharing and aggregation in future wireless networks). He is currently an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ONCOGNITIVE COMMUNICATION SAND NETWORKING, an Editor of CHINA COMMUNICATIONS and a Technical Editor of the IEEE 1900.6 Standard Association Working Group.
